매목 수리과에 속하는 조류이다. 수컷의 몸 윗면은 전체적으로 어두운 회색을 띠고 눈 위에는 흰색의 약한 눈썹선이 지나간다. 몸 아랫면은 흰색 바탕에 적갈색의 가는 가로줄 무늬가 있다. 암컷은 전반적으로 갈색을 띠고, 눈 주위는 검은색이며, 턱 밑과 턱 아래 부위는 흰색 바탕에 어두운 갈색 반점이 있다. 그 외의 아랫면은 흰색이며 황갈색과 어두운 갈색 가로띠가 있다. 겨울철새로 번식기에는 약간 높은 산지나 평지의 숲속에 서식하나, 번식기 이외에는 산림, 평지, 도시 인근 농경지 등에서도 관찰된다. 소형 조류나 작은 곤충, 다람쥐 등을 먹는다. 둥지는 보통 잡목림의 4~8m 이상 높은 가지에 가느다란 나뭇가지를 접시 모양으로 쌓아 만든다. 5월경 알 4~5개를 낳는다. 전국에서 관찰되고 세계적으로는 유럽, 아프리카, 러시아, 중국, 일본에 분포한다. 해외에는 유럽, 아프리카 서북부, 러시아, 중국 북부, 사할린, 일본 등에서 서식한다. [2]
국내에는 경우 전국적으로 분포하며, 이동 시기에 경유지로 판단되는 서해 도서 지역과 부산시 등에서 관찰된다. [2]

새매는 비번식기에 단독생활을 하며 개활지, 농경지, 하천, 도서 등에서 관찰된다. 소형 조류나 작은 곤충, 다람쥐 등을 먹는다. 번식기에는 약간 높은 산지나 평지의 숲속에 서식한다. 둥지는 보통 잡목림의 4~8m 이상 높은 가지에 가느다란 나뭇가지를 접시 모양으로 쌓아 만든다. 5월경 알 4~5개를 낳는다. 알은 옅은 푸른색 바탕에 붉은빛 도는 갈색의 큰 얼룩무늬와 옅은 보라색 무늬가 산재한다. [2]
