도요목 검은머리물떼새과에 속하는 조류로 드문 텃새이다[멸종위기 야생생물 II급]. 몸길이 45cm. 암수의 형태는 유사하다. 여름깃은 등 아래, 허리, 위꼬리덮깃, 가슴 아래, 배가 흰색이며 나머지 몸 깃털은 검은색이다. 부리와 다리는 붉은색이며, 날 때 날개 윗면에 뚜렷한 흰색의 굵은 줄이 보인다. 어린 새의 등과 날개덮깃은 갈색을 띤 검은색이며, 깃 가장자리는 황갈색이다. 부리와 다리의 붉은색은 어미 새보다 흐리다. 알은 황갈색 바탕에 크고 검은 갈색 무늬와 회색 얼룩점이 있다. 도서 지역의 암초가 있는 곳, 하구의 삼각주, 갯벌에서 생활한다. 갯벌에 길고 뾰족한 부리를 깊숙이 넣어 먹이를 잡으며, 조개류의 껍데기 사이에 부리를 넣고 비틀어 연다. 번식기가 되면 수컷이 암컷 앞에 서서 머리를 숙이고 부리를 땅 위에 댄 채 좌우로 흔들어 구애한다. 둥지는 하구의 작은 섬이나 연안 무인도의 땅 위, 암초 위의 오목한 곳에 접시 모양으로 만들고 안에는 풀을 깐다. 4~5월에 알 2~3개를 낳는다. 국내에는 서남해안의 도서 지역에서 번식하고 겨울에는 해안과 갯벌 지역에 서식한다. 세계적으로 유럽, 아프리카, 인도, 일본, 중국 동부, 타이완에 분포한다.   • 국내에는 시화호, 남양만, 장항 해안, 금강 하구, 만경강, 순천만, 낙동강 하구와 서남해안과 도서지역에서 서식하며, 겨울철에는 유부도가 국내 최대 월동지이다. [1]

    전 세계적으로 유럽과 서북아프리카, 동북아프리카, 서북인도, 캄차카반도, 일본, 중국 동부, 대만 등지에 서식한다. [1]

  • 도서지역의 암초가 있는 곳, 하구의 삼각주, 갯벌 등지에서 작은 무리를 이루어 사는 텃새다. 갯벌에 길고 뾰족한 부리를 깊숙이 넣어 먹이를 잡으며, 조개류의 껍데기 사이에 부리를 넣고 비틀어 연다. 번식기가 되면 수컷이 암컷 앞에 서서 머리를 숙이고 부리를 땅 위에 댄 채 좌우로 흔들어 구애한다. 둥지는 하구의 작은 섬이나 연안 무인도의 땅 위, 암초 위의 오목한 곳에 접시 모양으로 만들고 안에 해안에서 얻은 풀을 깐다. 4월 중순부터 5월 사이에 알 2~3개를 낳는다. 알은 황갈색 바탕에 크고 검은 갈색 무늬와 회색 얼룩점이 있다. 높고 날카롭게 ‘크리’ 또는 ‘피이’하고 큰 소리로 운다.
