봄과 가을에 한반도를 드물게 통과하는 나그네새이나 드물지 않게 월동하기도 한다. 몸길이 약 34cm이다. 다리는 짧고 부리는 곧고 길다. 암수 같은 빛깔이다. 몸 윗면은 검은색과 갈색, 회색의 작고 복잡한 무늬로 덮여 있으며, 아랫면은 연한 갈색 바탕에 어두운 갈색 물결무늬가 있다. 턱 밑은 흰색이다. 단독으로 또는 암수가 함께 생활한다. 야행성이며 낙엽활엽 관목이나 잡목 숲에서 번식한다. 나무뿌리 부근의 오목한 곳에 낙엽이나 마른풀로 접시 모양의 둥지를 만든다. 4월 상순~6월 하순에 한배에 알 3~4개를 낳는다. 모족류, 곤충류, 다족류, 갑각류, 연체동물 등과 아울러 식물의 열매도 먹는다. 유라시아 중북부에서 번식하고 아프리카 북부, 인도, 중국(남부), 한국, 일본 등지에서 겨울을 난다.
