도요목 도요과에 속하는 조류로 국내에는 봄과 가을에 흔하게 통과하는 나그네새이며, 매우 적은 수가 서해안과 일부 도서지역에서 번식하는 매우 드문 여름철새이다. 몸길이 27.5cm. 날 때 날개 뒷부분에 흰색 부분이 넓게 보인다. 몸 윗면은 갈색이며 검은색과 회색의 얼룩무늬가 있다. 아랫면은 흰색 바탕에 갈색 세로무늬와 얼룩이 빽빽하다. 다리와 부리가 붉고 부리 끝은 검다. 해안가의 소택지, 간척지, 염전, 해안 가까운 초습지, 하구의 삼각주에 서식하는 나그네새이며 물 고인 논, 염전, 갯벌에서 작은 무리를 이루어 서식한다. 3~5월에 알을 4~5개 정도 낳는다. 주로 곤충류, 연체동물, 갑각류 등을 먹고 산다. 주로 서남부 해안을 통과하며 세계적으로는 알타이-아무르, 히말라야, 일본, 인도, 스리랑카, 미얀마, 말레이 반도, 필리핀에 분포한다. 국내에는 봄과 가을 이동시기에 흔히 관찰되며, 영종도와 시흥시 갯골생태공원, 서천 유부도 등지에서 번식이 기록되었다. [1]
알타이-아무르, 히말라야, 일본, 인도, 스리랑카, 미얀마, 말레이반도, 필리핀에 서식한다. [1]

해안가의 소택지, 간척지, 염전, 해안 가까운 초습지, 하구의 삼각주에 서식하는 나그네새로 보통 작은 무리를 이루어 서식하며 다른 도요무리와 섞여 생활하는 경우도 많다. 강가 또는 호숫가 초원이나 툰드라 지대의 땅 위 오목한 곳에 마른 풀 줄기를 깔고 지름이 약 15cm 되는 둥지를 튼다. 3월 하순에서 5월 상순에 한배에 알을 4~5개 낳는다. 먹이는 곤충류가 주식이지만 연체동물이나 갑각류, 지렁이도 잡아먹는다. [1]
