Tringa canutus Linnaeus, 1758
도요목 도요과에 속하는 조류로 국내에는 봄과 가을에 적은 수가 통과하는 나그네새이다. 몸길이 23.5cm. 여름깃은 몸 윗면에 흑갈색 반점이 있으며 깃 가장자리는 흰색이다. 얼굴에서 배까지 선명한 적갈색이다. 배 아래쪽에서 아래꼬리덮깃까지는 흰색에 흑갈색 반점이 있다. 겨울깃은 몸 윗면이 회갈색이고 깃 가장자리는 흰색, 몸 아랫면은 흰색이며 가슴옆과 옆구리에 반점이 있다. 어린 새는 성조의 겨울깃과 유사하지만 등과 어깨는 깃 가장자리에 흑색 띠가 있고 깃 끝이 백색으로 비늘 무늬처럼 보인다. 유사종인 붉은어깨도요는 몸집이 더 크고 부리가 머리길이보다 약간 길다. 이끼와 선태류 등으로 덮인 건조한 구릉의 움푹한 곳에 둥지를 튼다. 산란기는 6월 중순~7월 상순이고 한배의 산란수는 4개이다. 갑각류, 지렁이, 곤충류를 즐겨 먹는다. 구북구 동부, 북극 툰드라, 쿠릴 열도, 팔라우 제도, 일본, 타이완 등지에 분포한다. 드문 나그네새. 갯벌과 강 하구에 서식한다. 이끼와 선태류 등으로 덮인 건조한 구릉의 움푹한 곳에 둥지를 튼다. 산란기는 6월 중순~7월 상순이고 한배 산란수는 4개이다. 갑각류, 지렁이, 곤충류를 즐겨 먹는다. 이동 시기에 붉은어깨도요 무리에 섞여서 움직이는 경우가 많다. [1]
