도요목 도요과에 속하는 조류로 국내에는 흔하게 통과하는 나그네새이며, 일부는 무리를 이루어 갯벌과 강 하구에서 월동한다. 몸길이 17~21cm. 부리는 검은색이며 약간 아래로 휘어져 있다. 다리는 검은색이다. 여름깃은 등이 갈색이고, 몸 아랫면은 흰색이지만 배 한가운데 큰 검은 반점이 있다. 겨울깃은 등이 회색이고, 배의 검은 반점이 없어지고 흰색이 된다. 갯벌이나 간척지, 염전 등지에 도래하며 우리나라에 겨울새로 도래하는 도요새 중 가장 대표적인 새이다. 관목이나 풀뿌리 등의 오목한 곳에 접시 모양의 둥지를 튼다. 산란기는 5월 중순~6월 중순이며, 한배의 산란수는 4개이다. 패류, 달팽이류, 갑각류, 지렁이, 거미류, 곤충류를 먹는다. 우리나라 서남해 연안 및 도서와 일본, 중국에서 월동하며 유라시아, 북아메리카대륙의 한대 지역에서 번식한다.   • 국내에는 흔히 통과하는 나그네새이며 일부는 해안 사구, 하구에서 월동한다. [1]

    유라시아, 북아메리카대륙의 한대 지역에서 번식하고, 한국 서남해 연안 및 도서와 일본, 중국에서 월동한다. [1]

  • 우리나라에 겨울새로 도래하는 도요새 중 가장 대표적인 새이다. 갯벌, 염전, 물 고인 논에서 서식하며 무리를 이루어 생활한다. 빠르게 움직이며 조개류, 갑각류 갯지렁이를 잡아먹는다. 번식지에서는 관목이나 풀뿌리 등의 오목한 곳에 접시 모양의 둥지를 튼다. 산란기는 5월 중순~6월 중순이며, 한배의 산란수는 4개이다. 패류, 달팽이류, 갑각류, 지렁이, 거미류, 곤충류를 먹는다. [1]
