Alca monocerata Pallas, 1811
기러기목 오리과의 여름철새이다. 몸의 각 부위 길이는 날개 172~182mm, 꽁지 45~62mm, 발목 28~32mm, 부리 32~39mm이다. 몸 색은 암수가 같은 빛깔이다. 등 쪽은 검은 갈색이며, 배 쪽은 흰색에 약간의 어두운 회색의 무늬가 있다. 옆얼굴에는 두 줄의 흰 깃이 있다. 턱 밑과 목, 윗가슴 및 겨드랑이는 갈색을 띤 어두운 회색이다. 겨울깃은 가슴과 배가 흰색이며 무늬가 없다. 알은 광택이 없는 회백색 바탕에 연한 갈색이나 어두운 회색의 줄무늬와 점이 약간 산재하여 있다. 바닷가에 있는 섬이나 해양에서 생활한다. 헤엄과 잠수를 하면서 먹이를 찾는다. 알은 4월 상순부터 6월 상순까지 1개를 낳는다. 한국(평안북도 엽도, 강원도 통천), 알래스카(남부), 캘리포니아, 아무르, 사할린, 일본(북부) 등지에 분포한다.
