비둘기목 비둘기과의 새로 몸길이는 33cm쯤이다. 암컷과 수컷의 이마는 다소 장미색을 띤 엷은 잿빛 갈색이고, 머리꼭대기와 뒷머리는 장미색을 띤 엷은 잿빛 갈색이다. 귀깃과 뺨은 장미색을 띤 엷은 잿빛 흰색이며, 턱 밑과 멱은 장미색을 띤 엷은 잿빛이다. 가슴과 배는 장미색을 띤 잿빛이고, 아래허리와 아래꽁지덮깃은 푸른색이 낀 잿빛이다. 부리는 광택이 없는 검은색이고 다리는 붉은색이다. 인가 부근의 소림, 대나무 숲, 건물 주변의 나무 등에서 산다. 소나무, 삼나무, 대나무 위나 건물의 선반처럼 불쑥 나온 곳에 둥지를 튼다. 산란기는 3~7월이며, 한배의 산란수는 2개이다. 식물의 씨나 열매를 즐겨 먹지만 사람이 버린 빵 조각과 찌꺼기 등도 먹는다. 그 밖에 야채류, 딸기류, 벚나무 열매 등을 먹으며, 일부 무척추동물과 곤충류 등도 잡아먹는다. 우리나라 서해 도서, 홍도 등 전역에 서식한다. 세계적으로는 유라시아 대륙의 서유럽에서 동아시아에 이르는 넓은 지역에 번식한다.
