Picus major Linnaeus, 1758
딱다구리목 딱다구리과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 약 24cm이다. 머리꼭대기와 뒷목은 광택이 있는 남빛 검은색이고, 뒷머리에는 너비가 1cm 정도의 홍색 띠가 있다. 눈 주위와 귀깃은 갈색을 띤 흰색이다. 턱 밑, 멱, 목 옆은 갈색빛 흰색 또는 엷은 갈색이다. 아랫부리에서는 검은색의 뺨선이 지나간다. 가슴, 배, 옆구리는 갈색을 띤 흰색 또는 엷은 갈색이고, 아랫배는 장미색이다. 등, 허리, 위꼬리덮깃은 광택이 있는 남빛 검은색이다. 아래꼬리덮깃은 선명한 홍색이다. 꼬리는 검은색이다. 부리는 회색이고, 홍채는 붉은 갈색 또는 붉은색이다. 암컷의 뒷머리는 수컷에 있는 홍색 띠가 없고, 남빛 검은색을 띤다. 흔한 텃새이며 단독 또는 암수가 함께 생활할 때가 많다. 낙엽활엽수림, 잡목림, 아고산대의 삼림 속의 나무 줄기에 구멍을 파고 알을 낳는다. 5-7월에 4-6개의 알을 낳는다. 곤충과 거미, 식물의 열매를 먹는다. 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 유럽, 러시아, 북아메리카에 분포한다. 흔한 텃새이며 단독 또는 암수가 함께 생활할 때가 많다. 낙엽활엽수림, 잡목림, 아고산대의 삼림 속의 나무 줄기에 구멍을 파고 알을 낳는다. 5-7월에 4-6개의 알을 낳는다. 곤충과 거미, 식물의 열매를 먹는다. [2]
