흔하지 않은 나그네새이다. 암컷과 수컷의 이마, 머리꼭대기, 뒷머리, 눈 앞, 귀깃, 뺨은 흑갈색이고, 턱 밑과 목의 앞은 흰색이다. 등, 어깨깃, 위꼬리덮깃은 머리꼭대기와 같은 색이다. 가슴, 배, 옆구리, 아래꼬리덮깃은 흰색이다. 부리는 검은색이고, 다리는 어두운 갈색이다. 제비 무리에 섞여 이동한다. 배 밭이나 갈대밭을 잠자리로 한다. 수면을 나는 곤충 등을 날면서 잡아먹는다. 호수와 하천의 물가에 있는 모래땅, 흙 벼랑, 경작지의 모래층에 구멍을 파서 둥지로 하며 집단으로 다수가 번식한다. 산란기는 6~7월이며, 한배의 산란 개수는 3~5개이다. 시베리아 동남부, 아무르, 사할린, 쿠릴 열도, 홋카이도에서 번식한다.
