참새목 오목눈이과 새로 몸길이는 14cm가량이다. 암컷과 수컷의 이마, 머리꼭대기, 뒷머리, 눈 앞, 턱 밑, 멱은 흰색이다. 눈 위에 있는 검은색의 굵은 눈썹선이 뒷목까지 이른다. 날개는 검은 갈색이다. 부리는 검은색이고, 홍채는 어두운 갈색이다. 다리도 어두운 갈색이고, 종아리의 깃털은 엷은 갈색이다. 산림, 낙엽활엽수림, 송림, 잡목림, 관목림에서 서식한다. 온대부터 아한대 지역에 걸쳐 널리 번식한다. 우리나라의 산림 전역에서 번식하는 흔한 텃새이다. 번식기에 암수가 함께 생활하며, 기타 시기에는 4~5마리 또는 10마리 정도의 가족군을 형성하는데 때로는 다른 종과 섞여 큰 무리를 지을 때도 있다. 주로 나무 위에서 생활한다. 낙엽활엽수림, 송림, 잡목림, 관목림 속에 영소한다. 알은 4~6월, 한배에 7~11개, 때로는 13개 낳는다. 곤충류가 주식이며, 거미류도 먹는다. 식물성으로는 콩과식물의 종자도 먹는다. 한반도 전역, 유라시아 대륙에 분포한다.
