평지의 산림, 과수원, 농경지 주변에 서식하며, 나무 위에서 열매, 곤충, 거미류를 잡아먹는다. 암수가 같은 색을 띤다. 몸 윗면은 어두운 녹회색이고, 날개와 꼬리의 일부는 녹색을 띠는 황색이다. 앞이마에서 정수리까지는 검은색, 정수리에서 뒷머리까지는 흰색이다. 뒷목에 검은색과 흑갈색 무늬가 있다. 귀깃은 흑갈색이며 작은 흰색 반점이 있다. 앞가슴은 회갈색, 배는 탁한 흰색이다. 비상시 파도 모양으로 난다. 비교적 경계심이 적은 편이고, 나뭇가지에 앉아 “깩- 깩”하는 울음소리를 낸다. 세계적으로 대만, 중국 남부, 하이난섬, 베트남 북부에 분포한다. 우리나라에서는 2002년 10월 전라북도 어청도에서 처음 확인된 이후 전라남도 하태도 및 홍도 등지에서도 관찰되는 등 관찰기록이 증가하고 있는 추세다.
