Sturnus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758 (흰점찌르레기)
참새목 찌르레기과의 조류로 몸길이는 22cm가량이다. 암수 모두 등, 목덜미, 가슴 등은 광택이 나는 무지갯빛 녹색 깃털로 덮여 있다. 날개는 검은색이지만 녹색 또는 자주색으로 보이기도 한다. 부리 빛깔은 평소에는 검은색이나 번식기에는 노란색으로 변한다. 다리는 붉은 갈색, 홍채는 흑갈색이다. 수컷의 가슴에는 가늘고 긴 깃털이 있으나, 암컷은 짧고 맵시 있는 깃털이 있다. 수컷은 부리 기부에 파란색 반점이 있으나, 암컷은 분홍색 얼룩이 있다. 주로 산이 없는 저지대, 황야, 바닷물이 드나드는 늪지 등에서 무리 지어 산다. 곤충, 씨앗, 열매 등 아무것이나 잘 먹는다. 수명은 15년 정도이다. 번식기에는 나무, 건물, 옥상 등의 구멍이나 갈라진 틈에 둥지를 짓는다. 간혹 다른 새들이 지은 둥지를 빌리기도 한다. 우리나라 천수만, 해남, 제주도 등지에서 관찰되는 미조(迷鳥)이다. 겨울이 되면 깃털의 끝부분이 가슴부터 흰색 또는 크림색으로 변해 흐린 검은색 바탕에 얼룩 반점이 있는 것처럼 보여서 흰점찌르레기라는 이름이 붙었다.
