우리나라 전역에 걸쳐 불규칙적으로 도래하는 흔하지 않은 겨울새이다. 몸길이 15cm이다. 머리는 검은색, 뺨과 멱, 윗가슴은 붉은색, 등은 회색, 배는 장밋빛을 띤 옅은 회색, 윗날개 끝과 꼬리는 검은색이다. 여름철에는 암수가 함께 생활하고, 가을철과 겨울철에는 작은 무리를 이룬다. 나무 위에서 주로 생활한다. 관목 가지에 나무껍질, 풀뿌리 등으로 컵 모양 둥지를 만든다. 산란기는 5~7월이고, 연 2회 번식하며, 한배의 산란수는 4~6개이다. 식물의 씨앗이나 어린잎, 곤충 등을 먹는다. 아무르강 하류, 우수리, 사할린 등지에서 번식한다.
