아시아, 인도에 분포하며, 관목림, 농경지 주변에 서식한다. 몸길이는 17cm이다. 수컷의 복부는 노란색, 등은 녹색을 띠며, 머리와 가슴은 적갈색이다. 암컷은 수컷에 비해 비교적 엷은 색을 띠고 등은 회갈색, 머리는 갈색이다. 둥지는 나무나 관목림 내 덤불 속에 만들며, 3~5개의 알을 낳는다. 먹이는 주로 식물의 씨앗을 먹는다. [저작재산권자]
