참새목 멧새과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 15cm이다. 겨울 깃털 색은 머리, 뺨, 턱은 검은색, 가슴 이하의 아랫면은 황갈색을 띤 흰색으로 옆구리에 검은색의 굵은 세로 얼룩무늬가 있다. 등, 허리, 위꼬리덮깃은 검은 갈색이다. 여름에는 검게 보이던 부분이 옅어지거나 엷은 갈색으로 바뀐다. 잔디밭, 구릉, 관목림에 살며 봄과 가을에 한국을 통과하는 나그네새이며 또한 월동도 하는 겨울철새이다. 5-6월에 4-6개의 알을 낳는다. 식물 씨와 열매를 주로 먹고, 여름철에는 곤충을 먹는다. 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 캄차카, 오호츠크해, 사할린, 쿠릴 열도, 만주, 중국, 일본에 분포한다.
