참새목 멧새과의 조류로 몸길이 약 16cm이다. 수컷 겨울깃의 머리꼭대기와 뒷목은 흰색이나 각 깃털 끝은 폭넓은 황갈색이기 때문에 황갈색으로 보인다. 특히 머리꼭대기 중앙은 길다. 눈 앞과 눈썹은 황갈색이고, 귀깃은 다갈색이며 아랫면은 흰색으로 윗가슴 깃털 끝은 다갈색이고 다른 부분은 조금 황갈색을 띤다. 암컷 겨울깃은 겉으로 보아 수컷 겨울깃과 흡사하나 머리꼭대기의 깃털 기부는 어두운 갈색이다. 여름깃은 수컷과 같은 부분을 털갈이한다. 부리는 작으나 측압되어 높다. 홍채는 갈색이고, 다리는 짧고 희미한 검은색이다. 산지의 자갈밭, 해안의 암석지, 용암지 등에서 서식한다. 번식기 이외는 흔히 작은 무리로 생활한다. 알은 5월 중순~7월 중순, 한배에 4~7개, 드물게는 8개 낳는다. 여름철에는 곤충류를 많이 먹고, 종자나 열매 등도 즐겨 먹는다. 북극 시베리아, 아나디르 지역 연안, 캄차카 동부 등지에서 번식한다. 시베리아 초원, 알타이, 몽골, 만주, 아무르, 우수리, 사할린, 쿠릴 열도, 중국 허베이성, 일본 북부, 한국 등지에서 월동한다. 우리나라에서는 겨울철 미조(迷鳥)이다.
