혼효림에서 산생 또는 군생하며, 때로 균륜을 형성하는 경우도 있다. 갓은 지름 4.0-9.0cm로, 반구형에서 편평형이 된다. 갓 표면은 자색이었다가 점차 퇴색하여 갈황색을 띠고, 평활하며, 가장자리는 굽은형이다. 주름살은 자색이고, 주름의 폭은 빽빽하며, 대에서 끝붙은형이다. 대는 크기 4.0-7.0×0.7-2.0cm이다. 기부는 곤봉형이며, 표면은 갓과 같은 색이고 섬유상이다. 포자는 타원형으로, 표면에 미세한 돌기가 있으며, 크기는 5.0-7.0×3.0-4.0㎛이다. 전국에 분포하며, 세계적으로 호주 및 아프리카 등지에 분포한다.
