분류체계
식육목 개과에 속하는 포유류이다. 몸통의 길이는 52~66cm이며, 꼬리의 길이는 15~18cm이다. 대체로 흑색에 가깝고 배면 정중선의 띠, 눈 밑의 반점, 앞다리의 띠는 검은색이 더욱 짙다. 낮에는 굴속에서 잠을 자고 밤에 주로 활동한다. 다리가 짧고 몸이 비대해 빠르게 달리지는 못한다. 일정한 장소를 선택하여 배설하며, 개과 동물 중 유일하게 동면한다. 깊지 않은 산림이나 골짜기, 어류가 풍부한 습지나 개울이 많은 곳에서 서식한다. 11월 중순부터 3월까지 동면하지만, 기온이 높아지면 깨어나 먹이를 찾기도 한다. 5~6월에 4~5마리의 새끼를 낳는다. 전국의 산림에 서식하며, 세계적으로는 중국, 일본에 분포한다.
