분류체계
식육목 바다사자과에 속하는 포유류이다. 몸길이는 2m, 몸무게는 270kg에 이르며, 보통 수컷의 몸무게는 암컷보다 약 5배 정도 되기도 한다. 머리는 튼튼하고 목이 굵으며 몸은 방추형이다. 다리는 모두 물고기의 지느러미 모양이어서 헤엄치기에 적당하며, 앞지느러미가 상대적으로 길고, 뒷지느러미를 앞으로 회전할 수 있어 다리로 걸을 수 있는 점이 물범류와 다르다. 꼬리는 매우 짧고, 귀가 작다. 수컷은 성숙하면 목으로부터 어깨에 걸쳐 갈기가 생긴다. 외딴섬의 해안, 바위가 많은 곳에 살며 오징어, 청어, 명태, 정어리 등을 먹는다. 물속에서는 주로 앞다리를 써서 시속 25km 정도로 헤엄친다. 짝짓기 시기는 6~7월이다. 동해, 남해, 서해 남부에 서식하고 세계적으로는 오호츠크해, 베링해에 분포한다. 국내에는 겨울에 동해를 거쳐 남해 및 서해 남부에 가끔 출현하며, 과거 동해안에는 물개류 중 가장 흔한 종이었다. [2]

외딴 섬의 해안, 바위가 많은 곳에 서식하며, 오징어, 청어, 명태, 정어리 등을 먹는다. 물속에서는 주로 앞다리를 써서 시속 25km 정도로 헤엄친다. 짝짓기 시기는 6~7월이다. 주로 북위 42° 이북의 북태평양의 동서 연안 및 해양 지역의 도서 지역에서 번식하고, 겨울에 북위 34° 해역까지 남하한다. [2]
