분류체계
수컷의 경우 몸길이는 26~35cm이고 꼬리 길이는 10~20cm로 암컷보다 크다. 대륙족제비와 비슷하지만 털색의 차이로 구별할 수 있다. 겨울 털은 대륙족제비에 비해 약간 암색을 띤다. 몸 윗면, 네 다리, 꼬리는 황색을 띠며, 이마는 거무스레한 갈색, 뺨과 몸 아랫면은 짙은 황토색을 띤다. 입술과 아래턱 사이에 뚜렷한 백색 무늬가 있다. 주둥이는 뾰족하고 귀는 작으며 입 양쪽에 흰색 무늬가 있다. 인가에 가까운 농작물 경작지의 밭둑 또는 냇가의 큰 돌 같은 곳에 구멍을 파고 서식한다. 일반적으로 집쥐·들쥐·개구리를 잡아먹으므로 사람에게는 매우 유익한 동물이나 종종 민가에 침입하여 키우는 가금류를 물어가 피해를 주기도 한다. 한국, 만주, 우수리강 유역, 일본 대마도에도 분포한다.
