분류체계
설치목 쥐과에 속하는 포유류이다. 몸길이는 50~65mm, 꼬리는 50~64mm이다. 털은 부드럽고, 등면은 회색을 띤 갈색, 허리는 노란빛을 띤 오렌지색, 배면은 흰색이다. 벼과나 사초과 식물이 무성한 초원에 서식한다. 벼과나 사초과 식물의 60~100cm 되는 높은 곳에 새 둥지 모양의 보금자리를 만들고 그 속에서 산다. 보금자리의 크기는 15cm×15cm 정도이며 드나드는 구멍의 지름은 2cm이다. 번식 시기는 7~8월이고, 1년 1회 4~6마리의 새끼를 낳는다. 성질이 매우 온순하여 새끼나 어미를 잡아다 사육하며 단시일 내에 친숙해질 뿐만 아니라 손바닥에 놓아도 비스킷이나 사과를 잘 먹는다. 전국에 서식하며 일본, 타이완, 중국, 시베리아, 인도차이나 북부, 유럽 등지에 분포한다.
