메기목 메기과에 속하는 민물고기로 하천이나 호소의 진흙 바닥에 산다. 보통 30cm 정도이지만 1m 이상 자라기도 한다. 몸은 길고 전체적으로 원통 모양이지만 머리는 위아래로 납작하고 몸 뒤쪽은 옆으로 납작하다. 몸에는 비늘이 없이 점액으로 덮여 있다. 수염은 2쌍이다. 몸 색깔의 변화가 심하며 불규칙한 얼룩무늬가 특징이다. 야간에 치어와 작은 동물을 잡아먹는다. 한국, 중국, 타이완, 일본에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
