남부지방 바닷가 산기슭 양지에서 자라는 상록 활엽 큰키나무로 높이 10~15m, 지름 1.2m에 이른다. 잎은 어긋나며 가죽질인데 새로 돋아나는 잎은 마치 죽은 잎처럼 난다. 잎몸은 길이 7~18cm, 폭 4~7cm, 긴 타원형, 난상 피침형 또는 피침형에 끝은 점차 뾰족해지고, 밑은 뾰족하다. 잎맥은 3출맥이며 잎 뒷면은 백색이고 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 꽃은 암수딴그루로 10~11월에 피며 황백색이고 꽃자루가 없는 산형꽃차례에 꽃이 밀착하며 꽃차례에 갈색 털이 밀생한다. 화피는 얕은 종형이고 4개로 깊게 갈라진다. 수꽃은 수술이 8개, 암꽃은 편평한 암술머리를 가진 암술이 1개이다. 열매는 둥글며 지름 12mm, 다음 해 10월에 적색으로 익는다. 우리나라 경북 울릉도, 제주도 및 서남해안 도서지역에 자생하며, 중국 저장성, 타이완, 일본 혼슈 이남 등에 분포한다. 방풍림, 조경수로 심으며, 목재는 건축재, 토목재, 가구재, 포장재로 이용한다. 열매는 향수 원료로 이용한다.
