숲속, 숲 가장자리, 산기슭에서 자라는 두해살이풀이다. 뿌리는 긴 타원형이다. 줄기는 높이 8~50cm로 가지가 갈라지며 겉에 능선이 있다. 잎은 어긋나며 위로 올라갈수록 잎자루가 짧아진다. 뿌리에서 난 잎은 길이 3~8cm이며 2회 3갈래로 갈라지는 깃꼴겹잎이다. 꽃은 3~4월에 줄기나 가지 끝에 발달하는 3~18cm의 총상꽃차례에 피며 붉은 보라색 또는 푸른색이다. 꽃싸개잎은 부채 모양이다. 꽃자루는 꽃이 필 때 길이 0.4~1.9cm다. 꽃부리는 길이 2.0~2.4cm다. 수술은 6개다. 열매는 원통 모양의 삭과이며 길이 1.5cm쯤이다. 씨는 검은색으로 윤기가 있다. 우리나라 중부지방 이남에 나며, 타이완, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 홍자색 꽃이 피므로 다른 괴불주머니 종류들과 구별된다. 관상용으로 심는다. 자주현호색, 자주뿔꽃이라고도 부른다.
