굴거리
산지의 숲속에서 높이는 3~10m 정도로 자라는 상록 활엽 큰키나무이다. 어린가지는 붉은색이지만 굵게 자라면 녹색을 띤다. 잎은 가지 끝에 모여서 어긋나며 좁은 장타원형이다. 잎의 길이는 12~20cm로 끝이 뾰족하고 밑은 넓은 쐐기 모양이다. 잎 가장자리는 톱니가 없으며 가죽처럼 두툼하다. 잎의 표면은 녹색이고 뒷면은 분백색이다. 잎자루는 3~4cm 정도로 붉은빛 또는 푸른빛을 띤다. 꽃은 자웅이주이며 잎겨드랑이에 총상꽃차례로 달려 4~5월에 핀다. 화피는 없으며 수술이 8~10개, 암꽃은 약간 둥근 씨방에 2개의 암술대가 있다. 열매는 핵과로 긴 타원형이다. 10~11월에 짙은 하늘색으로 익는다. 우리나라 제주도, 전라남도, 전라북도, 충청남도 안면도에 나며 일본, 중국 등에도 분포한다. 이 종은 좀굴거리나무에 비해 잎이 크고 엽맥이 융기하지 않아 구별된다. 정원수, 관상수로 심으며, 목재는 소목공재나 가구재로 이용한다. 잎과 나무껍질은 약용하며, 염료로 쓴다.
