바닷가 모래땅에 자라는 지중해 원산의 두해살이풀이다. 줄기는 곧추서며, 높이 30~60cm, 듬성하게 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며 잎자루를 포함한 길이 5~20cm, 폭 2~5cm, 깃꼴로 갈라지며, 갈래잎은 2~7쌍, 양면에 털이 있다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피며, 줄기와 가지 끝에서 총상꽃차례에 달린다. 꽃받침잎은 4장, 꽃잎은 4장, 난형, 길이 약 2cm, 흰색 또는 엷은 자주색이다. 수술은 6개 중 4개가 길고, 암술은 1개이다. 열매는 장각과, 염주 모양, 길이 5~8cm, 2~5개의 씨가 들어 있다. 우리나라 경상북도 울릉도, 경상남도, 제주도 등에 나며, 지중해에 분포한다. 무가 야생화한 것으로 뿌리가 가늘고 딱딱하며 잎이 작아 구별된다. 무아재비라고도 한다.
