분류체계
고도가 낮은 숲속의 풀밭이나 냇가 근처에 비교적 흔하게 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 전체에 거친 털이 많다. 줄기는 높이 30~100cm, 가지가 갈라진다. 뿌리잎은 깃꼴겹잎이며, 잎자루가 길다. 끝에 붙은 작은잎은 마름모에 가까운 난형 또는 도란상 피침형으로 길이 5~12cm, 폭 4~10cm, 끝이 보통 뾰족하다. 줄기잎은 작은잎 2~6장으로 이루어지며, 잎자루가 없거나 짧다. 꽃은 6~7월에 피는데 가지 끝에 한 개씩 달려 모두 3~10개이며, 노란색이고, 지름 2cm쯤이다. 꽃자루에 거친 털과 부드러운 털이 섞여 난다. 꽃받침과 꽃잎은 각각 5장이다. 수술과 암술은 많다. 열매는 수과이며, 여러 개가 모여 달리며, 7~8월에 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 자생하며, 러시아, 일본, 중국, 소아시아, 동유럽 등에 분포한다. 울릉도, 제주도 및 남부지방에서 자라는 뱀무는 키가 작고, 뿌리잎 끝에 붙은 작은잎은 난형 또는 넓은 도란형으로 끝이 보통 둥글며, 줄기 위쪽에 난 잎은 홑잎이므로 다르다. 어린잎을 식용하며, 뿌리줄기와 잎을 약용한다. 큰배암무라고도 한다.
