산기슭 양지에서 자라는 낙엽 떨기나무이다. 뿌리에서 싹이 나와 군생하며 높이 1m에 달하고 가시가 있으며 어린가지에 털이 밀생한다. 잎은 어긋나고 난형 또는 난상 피침형이며 끝은 점차 뾰족해지고, 밑은 뾰족하거나 심장 모양이며 길이 8~15cm로서 3출맥이 있고 가장자리에 불규칙한 잔 톱니가 있으며 표면은 맥 위에 털이 있고 뒷면은 융털이 밀생하며 밑부분이 3개로 갈라지는 것도 있는데 특히 맹아에 있어서 그러하다. 잎자루는 길이 15~20mm이다. 꽃은 4~5월에 피는데 지름 3cm로서 흰색이고 곁가지의 끝에 1~2개씩 달리며 꽃받침잎은 피침형이고 내외면과 씨방에 털이 있다. 꽃잎은 긴 도란형이며 꽃받침보다 길다. 열매는 취과, 둥글며 5~6월에 황홍색으로 익는데 독특한 냄새가 있으나 먹을 수 있다. 종자는 표면에 주름이 있다. 우리나라 남부지방, 인천광역시 도서 등에 자생하며, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 산딸기는 꽃이 산방꽃차례를 이루나 수리딸기는 잎이 달리는 마디에 1개씩만 달리는 특징으로 뚜렷이 구분된다. 열매를 식용한다. 민수리딸기, 청수리딸기라고도 한다.
