우리나라 무인도서에서 번식하고 겨울을 나는 흔한 텃새이다. 고양이 울음소리와 비슷한 소리를 낸다 하여 괭이갈매기로 이름 붙여졌다. 부리가 노랗고 끝이 붉은색이며, 날 때 꼬리 끝에 검은 띠가 있는 것이 특징이다. 몸은 전체적으로 흰색이며, 등과 날개덮깃은 진한 회색이다. 발과 눈은 노란색이며, 눈 테두리가 빨간색이다. 겨울에는 머리 뒤에 갈색의 줄무늬가 있다. 어린 새는 몸 전체가 갈색이며, 다리는 분홍색, 부리는 분홍색에 끝이 검은색이다. 서해안과 남해안의 무인도서에서 대규모 무리로 번식을 하며, 이른 봄부터 모여들어 8월까지 번식한다. 물고기 떼가 모이는 곳에 주로 모이고 해안, 강, 하구, 하천 등에서 볼 수 있으며, 물고기, 곤충, 물풀 등을 먹는다.   • 도서지방의 암초, 초지 또는 관목이 있는 지역에서 집단번식을 한다. 알을 낳기 전에 세력권 내에서 수컷이 암컷에게 먹이를 주는 행동이 관찰된다. 4-6월에 2~3개의 알을 낳고, 암수가 교대로 품는다. 번식기에는 도서지방에서 번식하면서 바다에서 먹이를 구하고, 비번식기에는 내륙의 해안, 하구, 호수 등에서 먹이를 찾는다. 주로 어류를 먹지만, 양서류, 연체동물, 곤충류도 먹는다. [2]
