고지대의 바위틈이나 풀숲에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 몇 개가 모여 곧게 자라며, 높이 7~30cm, 밑부분은 갈색 비늘조각이 많이 덮여 있다. 잎은 어긋나며, 도란형 또는 타원형으로 길이 1~3cm, 폭 5~15mm, 끝이 둔하며 가장자리에 둔한 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 없다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피며, 줄기 끝에 취산꽃차례로 달리며, 연한 노란색이다. 수꽃의 수술은 8~10개로 꽃잎보다 길며, 암꽃은 작으며 암술은 4~5개다. 열매는 골돌과이다. 익으면 4조각으로 벌어진다. 우리나라 북부지방에 자생한다. 러시아, 일본, 중국과 유럽, 북미에 분포한다.
