풀밭, 나지, 밭두렁, 길가, 마을 근처에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 옆으로 뻗고, 높이 5~15cm다. 뿌리잎은 여러 장이 모여나며, 길이 4~6cm, 폭 1~2cm, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 줄기잎은 마주나며, 길이 1.5~3.0cm다. 꽃은 4~6월에 잎겨드랑이에서 여러 개가 돌려나며, 분홍색 또는 자주색이다. 꽃받침은 5갈래, 털이 난다. 꽃부리는 길이 1.0~1.3cm, 윗입술은 2갈래, 아랫입술은 3갈래로 갈라진다. 수술은 4개다. 열매는 소견과다. 우리나라 경상남도, 울릉도, 전라남도, 전라북도, 제주도에 나며, 중국, 대만, 일본 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 조개나물에 비해서 주로 남부지방에 분포하며, 줄기는 옆으로 눕고, 전체에 곱슬곱슬한 털이 많으므로 구분된다. 어린 것은 나물로 먹을 수 있다. 한방에서는 관절 통증을 완화시키는 데 약으로 쓴다. 항암제 개발의 잠재성을 가지고 있다. ‘금란초’라고도 부른다.
