두루미목 뜸부기과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 여름철새이다. 몸길이는 약 32cm. 암수의 형태는 유사하며, 암컷과 수컷의 이마에 선명한 붉은색 이마판이 있다. 몸 전체가 검은색을 띠며, 어깨, 등, 허리, 날개깃은 어두운 갈색이다. 배 중앙과 아랫배의 각 깃털에는 잿빛 흰색 또는 흰색의 가장자리가 있다. 아래꼬리덮깃의 중앙 부분은 검은색이고 양쪽과 끝부분은 흰색이다. 아랫날개덮깃과 겨드랑이깃은 잿빛 갈색으로 흰색의 가장자리가 있다. 부리는 선명한 붉은색이며 다리는 황록색이다. 호소, 소택지, 호반가, 연못가 또는 저수지와 하구, 물 고인 곳에 살며 산란기는 5-8월이며, 한 배에 6-9개의 알을 낳는다. 각종 열매와 곤충, 연체동물, 갑각류, 환형동물 등을 먹는다. 우리나라에서는 중부 이남 전역에 서식하고 세계적으로는 호주, 뉴질랜드를 제외한 전 세계의 온대와 열대에 분포한다.   • 비교적 흔한 여름새로 산란기는 5-8월 이며, 한 배에 6-9개의 알을 낳는다. 각종 열매와 곤충, 연체동물, 갑각류, 환형동물 등을 먹는다. 줄이나 부들, 갈대숲 사이를 꼬리를 상하로 흔들며 조용히 걸어다닌다. [1]
