기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이 수컷 약 75cm, 암컷 약 53cm이다. 목이 다른 오리류에 비해 길고 가늘어 보이며 꼬리는 암수 모두 뾰족하다. 수컷은 머리에서 뒷목까지 어두운 밤색이다. 목 아래와 가슴은 흰색이다. 회색의 몸과 검은색인 아래꼬리덮깃의 경계부분은 연한 노란색이며 검은색의 중앙 꼬리깃은 매우 길다. 암컷은 전체적으로 갈색이며 부리가 검은색이다. 강이나 하구, 저수지에 종종 큰 무리를 이루고, 자맥질해 수중의 수초 및 식물의 종자를 먹는다. 유라시아대륙 북부, 북아메리카에서 번식하고, 겨울에는 유라시아대륙과 북아메리카의 온대에서 열대, 북아프리카에서 월동한다. 국내에는 겨울철 전국 습지에서 관찰된다.
