황새목 백로과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 여름철새이며 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이는 약 93cm. 암수의 형태가 유사하다. 등은 회색이고 아랫면은 흰색, 목 앞 중앙에는 검은 줄무늬가 있다. 머리는 흰색이며 검은 줄이 눈에서 뒷머리까지 이어져 댕기깃을 이룬다. 다리와 부리는 계절에 따라 노란색 또는 분홍색이다. 연못, 저수지, 논, 개울, 강, 하구 등 다양한 습지의 물가에서 단독 또는 2~3마리씩 작은 무리를 지어 행동한다. 4월 상순에서 5월 중순에 한배에 3~5개의 알을 낳는다. 먹이는 어류를 비롯하여 개구리·뱀·들쥐·작은 새·새우·곤충 등 다양하다. 유라시아대륙 중남부, 인도, 아프리카, 마다가스카르에 분포한다. 번식시기 국내 전국의 습지에서 관찰되지만 최근 겨울철에도 월동하는 개체수가 증가하는 추세이다.   • 국내 전국의 습지에서 관찰되는 여름철새이지만 최근 겨울철에도 월동하는 개체수가 증가하는 추세이다. [1]

    유라시아대륙 중남부, 인도, 아프리카, 마다가스카르에 분포한다. [1]

  • 우리나라에서는 흔한 여름철새이고, 겨울에는 월동을 위해 남하하여 내려오는 겨울철새이기도 하다. 못, 습지·논·개울·강·하구 등지의 물가에서 단독 또는 2~3마리씩 작은 무리를 지어 행동한다. 4월 상순에서 5월 중순에 백로류 집단번식지에서 한배에 3~5개의 알을 낳으며, 포란기간은 25~28일이다. 먹이는 어류를 비롯하여 개구리·뱀·들쥐·작은 새·새우·곤충 등 다양하다. [1]
