황새목 백로과의 조류로 흔한 여름철새이다. 몸길이 약 60cm. 암수의 형태가 유사하다. 흰색의 백로류 중 가장 작다. 깃은 균일한 백색이고, 윗목에서 두 개의 길고 흰 장식깃이 자란다. 부리와 다리는 흑색, 발은 노란색이다. 중대백로, 황로 등과 함께 집단 번식하며, 4월 하순~8월 상순에 알을 3~5개 낳는다. 어류, 개구리, 뱀, 갑각류(새우, 가재) 및 수서곤충 등을 잡아먹는다. 중국, 동남아시아, 인도, 유럽, 아프리카, 뉴기니, 호주에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

  • 국내에는 여름철새이지만 월동기에도 여러지역에서 관찰된다. 일부 개체들은 텃새화하여 국내에 서식하기도 한다. [1]

    중국, 일본, 동남아시아, 인도, 호주, 뉴기니에 걸쳐 분포한다. [1]

  • 흔한 여름철새. 논, 하천, 저수지, 갯벌, 하구 등 습지의 얕은 물가에서 물고기, 양서류, 수서곤충, 기타 갑각류 등을 다양한 방법으로 사냥한다. 대부분 집단번식지에서 중대백로, 황로, 왜가리 등과 섞여서 둥지를 틀며, 한배 산란수는 3~5개, 포란기간은 22~24일이다. [1]
