분류체계
설치목 청설모과에 속하는 포유류이다. 몸의 크기는 다람쥐보다 훨씬 크며, 털 색은 전체적으로 어두운 회색이며 배 쪽은 흰색이다. 털의 길이와 색깔은 계절에 따라 다르며 겨울철에는 귀에 털뭉치가 난다. 어린 새끼들은 눈을 감고 있으며 털이 하나도 없다. 잣나무, 가래나무, 가문비나무, 상수리나무, 밤나무 등의 열매와 나뭇잎, 나무껍질 등을 잘 먹는다. 때로는 야생 조류의 알이나 어미 새도 잡아먹는다. 늦가을에는 월동하기 위하여 도토리, 밤, 잣과 같은 견과류를 바위 구멍이나 땅속에 저장하여 두는 습성이 있다. 큰 나무줄기 또는 나뭇가지와 가지 사이에 마른 나뭇가지로 보금자리를 만든다. 까치의 둥지와 흡사하나 크기에 있어서 작다. 우리나라 북부 및 중부지방에 서식한다. 세계적으로는 일본, 중국, 몽골, 시베리아, 유럽 등지에 분포한다.
