솔잎난목 솔잎난과에 속하는 상록성 양치식물이다. 해안 근처의 암벽 바위틈이나 나무줄기 위에 착생한다. 뿌리줄기는 길게 기는데 지름 1~2mm, 암갈색 헛뿌리에 덮여 있으며, 불규칙하게 서로 엇갈려 있는 모양으로 갈라진다. 줄기는 다복하게 나며, 다소 모가 지고 녹색을 띠며, 높이는 10~30cm 정도, 윗부분에서 서로 엇갈려 있는 모양으로 가지가 갈라진다. 잎은 없으며, 작고 피침형인 비늘조각 모양의 돌기가 가지 위에 어긋나게 붙는다. 포자잎은 2개로 갈라지는데 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 포자낭이 달린다. 줄기는 녹색이고 2개씩 연속적으로 갈라진다. 포자낭은 3실이고 구형이며 녹색이지만 익으면 황색이 된다. 포자기는 6~9월이다. 관상용으로 심으며, 전초는 약용한다. 솔잎란, 송엽난이라고도 부른다. 우리나라 경남, 전남, 제주도 등에 자생하며, 일본, 타이완, 중국 등 세계 열대와 아열대 지역에 분포한다. 전 세계적으로 일본 중부, 중국, 필리핀 등지에 분포하고, 호주와 뉴질랜드, 그리고 미국 남동부와 유럽 남서부지역까지 나타난다. [2]
국내에는 제주도와 남해안 일대에서 발견되고 있으나 산사태나 자생지 주변 착생식물이 위협 요인이 되고 있다. [2]

다년생 상록 초본으로 계곡이나 오름 등의 암벽의 절개지를 따라 살지만 일부 개체군은 해수면과 인접해 살기도 하며, 햇빛이 충분히 비치는 건조한 곳을 선호한다. [2]
