소나무목 소나무과에 속하는 상록성 겉씨식물이다. 해발고도 1,000여 m 이상의 산지 사면 및 능선부에서 높이는 18m, 지름 1m 정도로 자라는 침엽 큰키나무이다. 나무껍질은 거칠며, 겨울눈은 난상 원형이다. 잎은 성숙한 개체의 경우, 도피침상 선형으로 길이 1cm, 너비 2mm 내외지만 어린 개체에서는 길이가 2cm 내외로 보다 길며, 끝이 대개 오목하게 파이고, 뒷면은 흰빛을 띤다. 구화수는 암수한그루이며 수분기는 4~5월이다. 수구화수는 타원형, 암구화수는 거의 장타원형으로 검은 자주색에서부터 밝은 녹색에 이르기까지 다양하다. 포편의 상부가 배주 인편 밖으로 노출되어 끝부분이 아래쪽을 향해 젖혀진다. 열매는 구과, 길이 5cm 정도의 타원상 원통형으로 녹갈색 또는 자갈색이며, 길이 4~6cm로 8~9월에 익는다. 종자에 날개가 있다. 이 종은 분비나무에 비해 잎이 약간 짧고 넓으며 구과 포린(包鱗)의 끝이 뒤로 젖혀지므로 구별된다. 목재는 건축재, 기구재로 이용하며, 정원수로 심는다. 우리나라 전북 덕유산, 경남 지리산, 가야산, 제주도 한라산에 자생하는 한국 고유종이다.
