기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 비교적 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이 약 75cm. 암수의 형태는 유사하다. 머리는 어두운 갈색이며 눈과 부리 사이는 흰색이다. 몸 윗면은 회갈색이며, 각 깃털의 가장자리가 흰색이다. 귀깃, 목, 턱 밑, 멱은 갈색이고, 가슴과 배는 회갈색에서 흰색까지 다양하며, 검은색 얼룩무늬가 있다. 부리와 다리는 붉은색을 띤 살구색부터 옅은 색까지 다양하다. 국내에는 대부분 큰기러기 무리와 함께 섞여 월동하며, 평야지대와 해안 등지의 개방된 습지 또는 수확이 끝난 농경지에서 낟알, 벼 그루터기, 풀잎, 줄기, 뿌리 등을 먹는다. 항상 무리를 이루어 행동하며 경계심이 강하다. 잠을 잘 때는 머리를 등의 깃털에 파묻고 한쪽 다리로만 서 있거나, 배를 땅에 대고 있다. 알은 흰색이며, 산란기는 5~7월, 한 배 산란수는 6~7개이다. 유라시아, 북아메리카 대륙 일부, 그린란드의 북극권에서 번식한다. 국내에는 큰 무리를 이루어 전국의 호수와 저수지, 강, 해안, 간척지 등의 습지와 농경지에서 월동한다.   • 국내에는 큰 무리를 이루어 전국의 호수와 저수지, 강, 해안, 간척지 등의 습지와 농경지에서 관찰된다. [1]

    유라시아, 북아메리카, 그린란드의 북극권에서 번식하고, 유럽 중부, 중국, 한국, 일본, 북아메리카 중부에서 월동한다. [1]

  • 국내에는 흔한 겨울철새이다. 전국의 습지와 호수 농경지에서 낟알, 벼 그루터기, 풀잎, 줄기, 뿌리 등을 먹는다. 항상 무리를 이루어 행동하며 경계심이 강하다. 잠을 잘 때는 머리를 등의 깃털에 파묻고 한쪽 다리로만 서 있거나, 배를 땅에 대고 있다. 산란기는 5~7월이며, 흰색의 알을 6~7개 낳는다. [1]
