황새목 백로과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 여름철새이다. 몸길이 약 50cm. 암수의 형태가 유사하다. 머리는 둥글고, 부리와 목은 다른 백로류보다 짧다. 여름깃은 머리, 목, 등의 장식깃이 오렌지색이며, 번식 초기의 구애시기에는 홍채와 부리는 진한 주황색을 띤다. 겨울깃은 전체적으로 흰색이며, 부리는 어두운 노란색이다. 발은 검은색 또는 짙은 녹색이다. 논, 논둑, 수로, 밭, 하천가, 초지, 목초지에 살며, 한반도 전역에 도래하여 백로과 조류와 집단번식지에서 번식하는 여름철새이다. 황로는 다른 백로류보다 무리를 짓는 일이 많고, 주로 메뚜기, 개구리, 미꾸라지 등을 잡아먹는다. 번식기는 4~8월이다. 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 전 대륙의 열대에서 온대에 분포한다.   • 국내에는 1967년 전남 해남에서 처음으로 번식이 확인된 드문 여름철새였으나, 현재는 전국적으로 흔하게 번식하는 여름철새로 분류된다. [1]

    전 대륙의 열대에서 온대지역에 걸쳐 넓게 분포한다. [1]

  • 한반도 전역에 도래하여 번식하는 여름철새이다. 황로는 다른 백로류보다 무리를 짓는 일이 많고, 서식지도 습지와 함께 초지와 주변 농경지 등을 다양하게 이용한다. 주로 메뚜기, 개구리, 미꾸라지 등을 잡아먹는다. 번식기는 4~8월로 다른 백로과 조류의 집단번식지에서 함께 번식한다. 4개의 알을 낳으며, 포란기간은 22~26일이다. [1]
