참새목 굴뚝새과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 10cm 정도의 작은 새이다. 전체적으로 적갈색을 띠며 얼룩무늬가 있다. 부리가 짧고 뾰족하며 꼬리도 짧다. 산림, 숲 가장자리, 개활지에 살며 흔히 발견되는 텃새이다. 관목의 숲 사이, 계류의 바위 위, 벼랑, 인가의 처마 밑에서 먹이를 찾는다. 5-8월에 4-6개의 알을 낳는다. 곤충류를 주식으로 하고 거미류도 먹는다. 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 유라시아 전역에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

‘칫칫치잇 찌쪼로로로로로로로 치칫치쪼로로치칫’하며 길고 다양한 소리로 운다. 몸 크기에 비해서 큰 소리로 울며 레퍼토리가 120여 개로 다양한 소리를 내는 새로 알려져 있다. 그 소리를 전형적으로 표현하기 어렵지만 소리 중간에 항상 ‘칫 쪼로로로로로로로로’하는 트릴(trill)을 섞어서 운다. [2]
