유린목 뱀과에 속하는 파충류로 몸길이는 0.7-1.2m이며, 등에 붉은색과 검은색 가로무늬가 여러 개 있고, 옆구리에 검은색 얼룩무늬가 길게 늘어서 있다. 농경지, 민가 주변, 야산에 살며, 밤에 나와 두꺼비, 개구리, 쥐, 작은 새, 다른 뱀, 물고기 따위를 잡아먹는다. 난생으로 10개 정도의 알을 낳는다. 독은 없으나 성질이 사납다. 이빨이 작기 때문에 사람이나 큰 동물은 물려도 큰 상처를 입지 않는다. 우리나라 전역에 서식하며, 중국, 타이완, 일본 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

  • 주로 야산, 경작지 등에서 많이 발견되며, 논 주변이나 습한 지역에서도 발견되는 경우도 있다. 낮보다는 야간에 많이 활동하는 야행성이지만, 낮에도 가끔씩 관찰된다. 특히 이러한 습성 때문에 야간에 차에 의해 치어 죽는 경우가 많다. 10월 중순에 동면하고 이듬해 4월경부터 활동한다. 약간 추운 곳에서도 활동하며, 주요 먹이는 개구리, 쥐, 작은 새, 다른 종류의 뱀, 작은 어류 등이고 난생하며 10개 정도 산란한다. [2]
